John "Jack" Van Sloun, 79, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at Wesley Acres. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 29 at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church, 4600 Meredith Drive, Des Moines. The family will greet friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Merle Hay Funeral Home, 4400 Merle Hay Rd., Des Moines. Interment with military honors will be Monday, July 2 at Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

Jack was born August 1, 1932 in Richmond, MN to Leo and Helen Van Sloun. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1956 after two years of service and married Kathleen Hoppe on August 25, 1956. Jack retired from EMC as Vice President Comptroller after 35 years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, hunting, woodworking and was an avid golfer. Jack was a founding member of St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church and was a member of Knights of Columbus, Pride of Iowa Barbershop Chorus and the American Legion Post 728 in Johnston. He also volunteered at St. Vincent De Paul and the Iowa Gold Star Museum at Camp Dodge. Jack will be remembered for his quick wit and love of his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Helen Van Sloun; siblings, Faith Wahl, Helene Schwankle, Carole Theisen, Leon Van Sloun and Peter Van Sloun and infant grandson, Jimmy Gillihan.

Jack's memory will be cherished by his wife of 56 years, Kathy; daughters, Barbara (Henry) Burkard, Kay (Kevin) Funk and Pat (Darrell) Gillihan; sons, Jeff (Deborah) Van Sloun and Bill (Charmaine) Van Sloun; grandchildren, April (Daniel) Neiland, Christopher (Ashley) Burkard, Daniel (Brittany) Burkard, Blaize Reha, Alex and Andrew Funk, John (Kayla) Van Sloun, Kristen Van Sloun and Christian and Katie Van Sloun; great-grandchildren, Alexis and Bailey Reha, Casy Neiland, Julia and Imogen Burkard and soon-to-be Lily Neiland. He is also survived by one brother, Kevin (Mona) Van Sloun; sister-in-law, Leo Van Sloun; and brother-in-law, Dave Theisen.

The family would like to thank the staff and hospice staff at Wesley Acres for the loving and compassionate care they gave Jack during his stay.
